Down Syndrome Advocacy Foundation Meeting

Date : Thursday, October 15, 2009

Place : Courtyard Marriott, Ronkonkoma

Time : 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Topic:

Functional Assessment and Proactive Approaches to Challenging Behavior
Presenter:
John Innis, M.A., Behavior Consultant

Many children with disabilities display problem behaviors that, if not proactively addressed, can lead to educational segregation, community and social isolation, and diminished quality-of-life. The first step in developing effective interventions for these behaviors is to understand why they occur. Functional assessment is the method we use to understand what motivates behaviors and plan effective interventions. Mr. Innis will provide an overview of functional assessment and how you can use it successfully to address problem behaviors early.

Important: Due to space limitations, prior registration is required.
Please call 516-983-7008 or E-mail: dsaf03@gmail.com if you would like to attend.

  ******Upcoming Events & Meetings******

The Long Island Developmental Disabilities Service Office has awarded our Foundation funds to provide training to families of children with developmental disabilities residing in Nassau and Suffolk County. Each interested family will be provided with six hours of individual training to address challenges they face within home and community settings.

The training will be either provided by or overseen by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. The training can take place either in the home or at a place within the family’s community.

If you know of a family that could benefit from this service, please forward to them our contact information. We have several openings for this fall for those who meet OMRDD’s guidelines to receive services. We have resources for a limited number of families. Families will be accepted into the program on a first come first serve basis.
